Basic Faith
Presented during my artistic jury in 2023 at ERG, Basic Faith is a highlight of my sculptural research and experimentation in the realms of Christian iconography and bodybuilding conducted since September 2022. My presentation consists of five objects created using various materials such as wood, MDF, steel, plastic and concrete. While some objects are composed solely of raw materials, others also incorporate elements repurposed from their original use, whether they come from the world of bodybuilding or workshop machinery.
The intention behind this project was to create a fictional universe where the spheres of religion and sports would be intrinsically linked. For over 6 years, I have been a member of a gym, and for half that time, I have taken an interest in ancient religious texts. It is the convergence of these two worlds that I cherish and wanted to express through the sculptures I presented, a way for me to convey an inner syncretism, all with a touch of humor.
The realization of these different pieces was done under certain constraints, with two main ones being modularity and affordance. Regarding modularity, the different objects are constructed by prioritizing interlocking and screws to allow for easy disassembly, as well as possible adjustments and modifications, resulting in flexible and adaptable entities, always on the edge of being prototypes. As for affordance, I wanted to infuse the sculptures with a potential use as tools or equipment, surpassing the usual contemplative relationship between viewer and artwork.
